Pakistan’s Chief Justice, Kazi Faiz Isa, has said that people should trust that the army won’t engage in business because its job is to protect the country, not to do business.
This statement comes as the army and judiciary are being scrutinized.
The Supreme Court’s comments have yet to receive a reaction from the army chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa.
About eight years ago, a report by Pakistan’s newspaper ‘The Dawn’ mentioned that the Pakistani army was involved in around 50 types of businesses, with its business interests expanding. A petition has been filed in Pakistan’s Supreme Court, claiming that the army is involved in various businesses and uses government land meant for defense purposes for commercial activities.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Kazi Faiz Isa asked the government’s Attorney General, Mansoor Usman Awan, if they could assure the court and the nation that the army would solely focus on protecting the country and not use its land for commercial activities.(from sources).
