In the UNESCO World Heritage List for 2024-25, India has nominated 12 forts from the Maratha era for inclusion. These forts, built between the 17th and 18th centuries, hold significant historical and architectural importance. The nominated forts are Raigad, Rajgad, Shivneri, Torana, Lohagad, Salher, Mulher, Rangana, Ankai-Tankai, Kasa, Sindhudurg, and Khanderi.
The Central Ministry of Culture in India has submitted a proposal to UNESCO to include these Maratha forts in the World Heritage List, recognizing their cultural and historical significance. These forts were constructed during the 17th and 18th centuries and played a crucial role in the military strategy and coastal defense during the Maratha rule.
This move is part of India’s effort to have these Maratha forts globally recognized for their cultural and historical value. If included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, these forts will join the prestigious ranks of globally acknowledged heritage sites.
India currently has 42 sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the inclusion of Maratha forts would further enrich the country’s representation on the global heritage stage. The proposal reflects the commitment to preserving and promoting India’s diverse cultural and historical legacy.
