Mines Secretary V L Kantha Rao urges to use New Age Technology in Mineral Exploration Geological Survey of India holds Workshop on Emerging Technologies in Mineral Exploration

The Mines Secretary, V.L. Kantha Rao, emphasized using new technology, like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML), for finding minerals faster and more accurately. He said the old ways of studying earth data take too long, cost a lot, and might not always be very accurate. But now, with AI and ML, we can handle a lot of data quickly and effectively. He wants government groups and private companies to use the National Geoscience Data Repository’s vast information better. Rao also wants to hold 20 similar workshops across the country to encourage using AI and ML for exploration. He suggested using drones to map areas faster and asked exploration agencies and start-ups to focus on important minerals. Lastly, he asked state governments to keep working with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and organize more workshops like this one.

Janardan Prasad, Director General of GSI, highlighted mineral exploration’s crucial role in the country’s economic growth. GSI plans to use drones, AI, and ML for faster and more accurate mineral exploration, uncovering hidden deposits efficiently. He mentioned that AI and ML help integrate different data using proven algorithms, accurately identifying potential mineral-rich areas. Particularly, AI aids in creating 4D models, considering time, showing geological changes and history.

Technical sessions touched upon geoscience data integration using AI, ML, and 3D modeling, showcasing their potentiality in mineral targeting. Experts from GSI, MECL, IITs, NGRI, NAL, AMD, DMG, Karnataka, KIOCL, RSAA, ISRO, University of Hyderabad, IICT, FIMI, Rungta Sons Pvt. Ltd, MPXG Exploartion Pvt. Ltd, NMTDC, MMPL, Gemcokati Exploration, EDS Technology, Tata Steel, Seiger Geoscience Pvt. Ltd., Amazon web services, McPhar and Geomarine Solutions Pvt. Ltd etc. shared their expertise, emphasizing the critical role of new age technology alike AI & ML and Drone technology for promoting mineral exploration.

The event concluded with panel discussions, interactive sessions among various Govt. agencies and private stakeholders. The workshop not only showcased the commitment of GSI for creating conducive ecosystem for exploration but also set the stage for a collaborative and tech-driven future in mineral exploration.
