Padma Shri award to a organic cultivator from Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Meet Kamachi Chellammal, a 67-year-old farmer from Andaman and Nicobar Islands. She’s been honored with the Padma Shri award for her excellent work in organic coconut farming. Known as ‘Nariyal Amma,’ she uses unique methods like using coconut leaves for mulching, preserving moisture, and enhancing soil quality.

Chellammal also adopted eco-friendly pest control by attracting insects with ‘trap plants.’              She practices multi-species cropping, overcoming market challenges and increasing revenue.

Advocating for organic farming, she plans to explore agro-tourism with her son, showcasing diverse crops and fish farming.                  The award recognizes her achievements and promotes sustainable farming in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

She  explained, “Mulching helps minimize moisture loss and reduces weed population, crucial factors for maintaining a healthy coconut plantation.”

“I chose a sustainable path by avoiding harmful chemicals and embracing eco-friendly pest control methods.”

“Diversification has been key to financial sustainability in farming. It mitigates risks and boosts income.”
