Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu in the United Nations climate summit in Dubai

The Maldives, a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, covers about 90,000 square kilometers, with the land area of its islands totaling 298 square kilometers. It’s Asia’s smallest country and heavily relies on tourism (contributing to 28% of GDP), fishing, and marine products for its economy. There are nine political parties, and Islam is the state religion.

With a population of around 500,000, the Maldives has a Christian and Hindu population of roughly 0.5% each. India and the Maldives signed a trade agreement in 1981 and are both part of regional alliances like SAARC.

The current president, Mohamed Muizzu of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), won the 2023 election with 54.05% of the vote, defeating the former president. He’s advocated for the withdrawal of Indian troops citing security concerns, despite traditionally strong relations between India and the Maldives.

Muizzu’s stance led to protests by the Indian Embassy in Male. However, despite his initial demand for the withdrawal of Indian troops, he met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and agreed to enhance bilateral ties, raising questions about his initial campaign promise.
