Hindu side requesting excavation and scientific survey of a sealed section of the Gyanvapi site in Varanasi.

DelhiFour Hindu women have approached the Supreme Court, requesting excavation and scientific survey of a sealed section of the Gyanvapi Masjid in Varanasi.

This follows an ASI report stating the existence of a Hindu temple before the mosque’s construction. The disputed area, believed by Hindus to be a Shivling, is contested by Muslims as part of a ritual ablution tank.

The women seek ASI inspection, emphasizing the need to determine the original structure. They filed two applications, one to lift the restraint on the survey and the other for ASI to investigate the sealed area.

In its plea, the Hindu side has asked the top court to allow the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to carry out another comprehensive survey in the ‘wazukhana’ area without harming the ‘Shivling’.
