‘Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean’- Dr. S. Jaishankar at the 7th Indian Ocean Conference 2024

Ministry of External Affairs: (source pti): The growing strategic concerns in the Indian Ocean require heightened awareness and understanding before implementing policy responses.

Globalization’s current structure poses challenges like supply-side risks and concentration of manufacturing and technology.

Lessons from the Covid pandemic emphasize the importance of diversifying production and building resilient supply chains.

The digital era underscores the need for trust and transparency. Nations in the Indian Ocean must consider pursuing collective self-reliance for a sustainable future, focusing on digitalization, electric mobility, green hydrogen, and green shipping.

The Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IPOI) has seen significant progress. Germany focuses on capacity building and resource sharing, while the United States and Japan co-lead trade, connectivity, and maritime transport. India leads disaster risk reduction and management and co-leads maritime security.

These efforts strengthen cooperation among nations in sustaining the two oceans through practical projects. IPOI plans to launch new initiatives and collaborate more closely with the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) in the future.

He concluded,  “The Indian Ocean, more than any other region, bears witness to India’s greater contribution, responsibilities and interests. From a new Indian Institute of Technology campus in Zanzibar to Solar Mamas in the Pacific, the world sees a more empathetic, efficient and reliable India. We espoused the cause of the Global South and Small Island Developing States during our G20 Presidency. We similarly took forward the message of reformed multilateralism and climate justice. Our Indian Ocean region may be extraordinarily diverse and immensely complicated. But its inherent unity, so deeply rooted in our traditions and cultures, are today best advanced by more intense cooperation among member states. This Conference is a very useful gathering to encourage those very processes. And I conclude by once again expressing my deepest appreciation to the organizers and to our hosts in Australia, who have brought us around the table today.
